From an early age, Laurent Petitgirard forged an abiding artistic connection with Journey to the West (Si Yeou Ki), long nurturing a heartfelt desire to render this monumental Eastern epic through symphonic language. Following decades of artistic exploration and meticulous honing of his compositional voice, this long-held dream has finally been realised. Constructed upon the structural conventions of the Western classical symphony, the piece unfolds the sweeping saga of Xuanzang's arduous pilgrimage to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. It seamlessly weaves vivid, otherworldly fantasy imagery with layered philosophical contemplation. A landmark symphonic creation of remarkable depth and grandeur, this work encapsulates a profound, reverberating cross-civilisational dialogue between the East and the West.
