CASSADÓ Suite for Cello Solo
The cello was initially considered a less important instrument during the Baroque period. However, this perception changed during the time of Haydn. Bach, unlike other Baroque composers, began to develop the cello’ s solo capabilities early on. Today, cellist Gary Hoffman will perform a variety of solo compositions. One of the most renowned cellists of our time, Gary Hoffman, will be performing various solo compositions, including Bach’ s Cello Suite, an important piece that virtually all cello students must study. The term “suite” originates from the French “suivez”, which means to follow, and represents a sequence of dance and music combinations. Among Bach’ s six cello suites, the second suite’ s pensive minor key contrasts sharply with the magnificent major key of the third suite, enhancing their respective melodies and enabling listeners to appreciate the beauty of the larger overall. Ysaÿe is recognized as the “King of the Violin” due to his exceptional playing abilities and was honoured by Debussy, Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninoff, and many others. Although known for his violin talent, Ysaÿe also delved into composition. His Sonata for Cello Solo in C minor is one of his notable works. Cassado is a disciple of the legendary cellist Casals. His Suite for Cello Solo mixes traditional Spanish music style with the sound colour sensitivity of his mentor Ravel, creating a piece rich in exotic flavor.
