Symphony No. 4 in D Minor, Op. 120
Schumann and his wife shared an enviable relationship, and he composed all four of his symphonies around her. The couple was inspired to write Symphony No. 3 in E - flat Major “Rhenish” after visiting the Rhineland in Germany. The Rhine River has been a significant inspiration for numerous writers and artists, and Schumann’ s Symphony No. 3 reflects the romantic mood of the river. Performed by cellist Gary Hoffman, the Cello Concerto in A Minor, one of Schumann’ s most important compositions from his later time. It was written in under two weeks. Schumann, who suffered from auditory hallucinations and sickness, revised the piece before his suicide attempt, in which he jumped into a river. As a result, this concert thoroughly expresses Schumann’ s deepest emotions. Symphony No. 4 in D Minor was composed a year after Symphony No. 1 to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. As a tribute to his wife, he named it the “Clara” Symphony. The piece had an unsuccessful premiere and remained dormant for ten years until 1851 when Schumann revised it and performed it to great success. It was then released as Symphony No. 4 in D Minor.
