BIZET Symphony No.1 in C Major
L’ARLÉSIENNE Suite No. 1
L’ARLÉSIENNE Suite No. 2
Bizet was a highly regarded composer well - known for his “Habanera” from CARMEN, as well as for his musical talents, which were praised by many notable artists. At the age of nine, he was admitted to the prestigious music institution, the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris, and his piano playing abilities were lauded by Liszt. At the age of seventeen, the talented Bizet wrote the Symphony No. 1 in C Major in just one month. The symphony is lively and joyful, capturing the spirit of the French people in the first movement, favoring chromatic melody in the second movement which includes the appearance of Carmen’ s main melody later used in the “Habanera”, and returning to the joyful feeling of the first movement in the third movement with added grand momentum. The original music for the script of the same name, L’ARLÉSIENNE, was halted after 21 performances for various reasons. Bizet later selected four of the pieces and adapted them into the L’ARLÉSIENNE Suite I. Each piece has a completely different style, evoking images of the ancient castle of Provence followed by the busy villagers preparing for the festival. Bizet’ s mastery of melody brought the suite great acclaim upon its performance. L’ARLÉSIENNE Suite II was composed after Bizet’ s death by his friend Ernest Guiraud, who arranged the four compositions. The Minuet from the suite is particularly well - known and has been frequently used in film and television music.
