Wagner’s soaring masterpiece LOHENGRIN makes its debut on the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra stage – in a concert performance that brings out the best of Wagner’s breathtaking sonic universe. First premiered in 1850, the opera is a Romantic-era reimagining of a persistent Medieval legend about a mystical Knight of the Swan. Sent by God and possessing superhuman charisma and fighting ability, Lohengrin arrives to unite and strengthen the people, and to defend the innocent noblewoman Elsa from a false accusation of murder, but he imposes a condition: the people, and in particular, Elsa, must follow him without knowing his identity. Not surprisingly, some of the issues at stake are still urgently relevant in today’s world, ranging from the spiritual (the role of the divine in human lives) to the political (nation building in times of transition and migration) to the deeply personal (the centrality of mystery in erotic attraction). In this concert version, our very own Maestro XU Zhong conducts a supreme cast led by tenor Stefan Vinke in the title role of the mysterious Grail Knight. Soprano Shipley Charlotte-Ann is the virtuous duchess Elsa, falsely accused of murder, going head-to-head with soprano Heike Wessels as the cunning sorceress Ortrud, who seeks to lay her low. Bass-baritone Egil Silins is Ortrud’s power-hungry husband, Telramund, and bass Andreas Bauer Kanabas is King Heinrich.
